12.18 Strange Bedfellows
Whoa! Hello hot Neela and Ray tension! Wowser. I mean, yes, I have been shipping them, but I wasn't expecting that scene in the hallway, or down by the taxi, to have such punch to it. Sizzling.
The Gallants come to visit Neela and are textbook parents-in-law from hell. Not because they are judging Neela but because they are making her an unwilling confidente to their secret marital breakdown. Given Neela is clearly starting to think "WTF have I done, getting married?", with the whole Mikey not telling her stuff and Ray being all nekkid and caring, having a supposed great relationship fall apart in front of her can't be good. Hence her fleeing the scene before any potential infidelity could happen. And just, just, in time. I love the way Ray leans forward as Neela admits to sleeping in his shirt (and, hey! Passing in the Night has been Jossed!), and that he comes close to actually saying what he feels.
If you look at it from Ray's POV, he's developed a crush on his best friend and, on discovering the crush, she has walked away. Neela never says anything beyond "You know why" when he asks why she is moving out. He knows he fancies her but has he even got a clue that the reason she's running is not just because of his feelings, but because she has also realised she is getting way too close to him. She likes to sleep in his t-shirt (and it was a detail she hid from him, like a secret hugged close as she fell asleep alone each night) which is pretty damn intimite. No wonder everyone assumed they had slept together.
Also, other things happened.
Oh, alright. Pratt played around on Olivia and got caught. Luka and Abby had a mini-crisis over his urge to go to Africa again which Luka solved by sending Pratt instead. Can he even do that? Can you imagine the conversation with Kerry when he explains why his team is down one doctor? "He's in Africa. Yes, the same Africa I nearly died in. Yes, with Carter, who also nearly died there. I'm sure he will be fine." I can imagine Kerry's opinion on that.
I did love how the Luka/Abby scene was played when she decided she just had to tell him how she felt. I loved the way Maura made Abby stutter and gabble and tie herself up in knots of not wanting to tell Luka what to do but also wanting to say how she felt. It was a very real emotive scene.
As was the sexy nearly-kiss at the end. Whew! There are some good actors on this show.

12.16 Out on a Limb
I saw this when it was on, but Real Life has been being v. busy so here I am. I can't recall that much, which is bad. Reading the synopsis on Parminder Online, I am mostly thinking 'meh'.
Kerry finally agrees to surgery. Within the context of the show, this was well done. I liked her doubts about how she will define herself after this. Outside the context, a small bit of me snarks that she is only being fixed due to House cornering the market in grouchy doctors with walking sticks.
The Pratt is a prat storyline isn't really grabbing me. I feel like they just don't know what to do with him, and need someone to argue with Luka now Clemente is off.
Abby and the baby is, well, meh.
Neela cooks bad cookies. In light of subsequent episodes, I am starting to think Neela cannot actually cook. This would be a great reversal of things, if Ray is the one who can cook. Neela also sucks at Socialising 101, resulting in her cold-shouldering by the serviceperson's spouses gang. Yay for Neela's Britishness, in terms of how she swears at the cookie tasters, but boo for hitting us over the head with the political thing. If we had seen any sign of this gang before, or if there had been anyone there who looked like they wanted to agree it would have been a little more subtle.

12.15 Darfur
I watched this at 1.30am on Thursday night, having been out having cocktails till midnight. It was just as well I remembered there is the late night repeat as the 2nd chance Sunday on E4 wasn't on, nor is it on C4 tonight. WTF?
Carter in Dafur can be summed up quite quickly: Carter is in Darfur where it is very poor and very dangerous. Carter being Carter has to whizz around in jeeps saving individual patients instead of doing his bloody job at the understaffed hospital. Seriously, how patients weren't seen at the hospital whilst he was off being Johnny Hero? Admittedly, showing him struggling day after day with the lack of resources would have been less dramatic, but this, well, I struggled to think it was good. Hawkeye Piece can go off rescuing individuals in a warzone every now and then because that was in the context of an entire series set in a warzone: ER is set at County General, so straight away this episode looks like war-tourism. Yes, consciousness about Darfur should be raised but showing an American being pointlessly heroic may not be the best way.
Besides, you'd think he had learnt from all that business back in season 10 to behave rather differently. He nearly got Luka killed, FFS.
One tiny snippet within all that is that Carter and Kem are struggling with their relationship. Which hints that maybe the future will have a return to the Carter/Abby/Luka thing.
OK, that's all the Carter stuff out the way.
Kerry: Clemente is a great doctor with personal issues which is not uncommon in the ER.
Heh. Heheh. She nailed it. I love Kerry.
Clemente is technically back, although he spends all his time being either quizzed by the cops or at Jodie's bedside. The way he sticks by her is adoreable, and suggests he is hopelessly drawn to her. I get the feeling the cops aren't trying too hard to believe Clemente didn't do it. What happened to innocent until proven guilty.
Luka still has a problem with Clemente. I'm not sure why, since Clemente is no longer crowding Luka's patch. Besides, shouldn't Luka be more concerned about Abby and the Baby? I love that the Baby has become an open secret.
KJ's dad is back. Surprise, he's been drinking again but obviously expects Pratt to bail him out. Is Pratt crazy? That was rhetorical. Pratt is just stupid.
Bobby, Jodie's insane cop husband, is making calls to Clemente in a kind of "you screwed her so I'm going to screw you" way. This seems a bit dumb to me as it means there will be a cell phone record of where Bobby is calling Clemente from. And for a guy allegedly in New Jersey, his phone shouldn't really be in Chicago.
Is it me or are we in a bizarre slump? I mean, the Jodie and Clemente storyline should engage me way more than it does. Maybe it's just because I read too many spoilers so am instead waiting for later episodes? This is why I try to avoid reading spoilers, because it makes the whole thing less immediate and interesting. So. No more spoilers. No. Spoilers are bad, m'kay?

12.14 Quintessance of Dust
You know, I watched this last Thursday. I was, however, bewildered by a dream that night in which I was dating a guy who I knew but couldn't name. The main problem being that my mind then decided the nearest analogue would be Clemente. Yeah, don't ask.
So...
Clemente and Jodie are hiding out in bed with charlie. I love the fact he turns out to have this great crossword brain - it makes him seem more like the fast-thinking whizzy brain type, though the nose-candy and skiving off work to snort and shag suggest he's not quite got the hang of consequences.
Pratt is in a bachelor auction and is won by a bloke. "Is he cute?" asks Ray and Morris etc turn into 12 year olds. Morris's love/hate thing with the surgery woman continues. Abby calls the guys on how homophobic and sexist the guys are being when they call Allbright a bitch ("why is it any confident and smart woman in authority is a bitch?") which is great, but then it's revealed that the reason she's getting narked is because she's pulled an all-nighter and is worried about the amnio results on The Baby. So, you know, girly hormones are behind her sudden outburst of feminism?
Jodie's husband looks like a seedy, cut-price member of the Douglas clan. Woah! He shot them. The thing with the belief that Clemente did it is great, with Kerry doing her classic thing of supporting someone she likes even when there is great doubt over them.
Neela is struggling in surgery. Not helped by Allbright's bitchiness and Clemente's coke-fuelled advice. Really, what is Allbright's problem?
Morris: You are totally pregnant!
Abby: And you're in love with Allbright!
Ray deals with a homeless guy who turns out to be a musician. Ray's dad liked blues and it turns out homeless guy is someone he grew up listening to. It's a nice subplot, and gives them a chance to do a musical montage ending.
Carter! Sans hair. He looks kinda hot.

12.13 Body & Soul
Oooh, no "previously on...". This is going to be one of those ones designed to make us feel all teary and impressed at how dramatic in an emotional sense ER can be.
It's a guy with Lou Gerig's disease. Oh, it's a Big Name Actor one, as well. I'm not a massive fan of these kinds of episodes. They just seem so show-offy.
I'm also not keen on the fact that C4/E4 have started going into the advert break straight after the title sequence like we're American or something.
Ray and Sam are wearing their coats over their scrubs/lab coats. Actually prof already mentioned this. My theory, based on the fact others are wearing heavy sweaters under their lab coats, is that something is wrong with the heating. This would fit with the guy showing up in summer when the air conditioning is out. No wonder he has a low opinion of County.
Two years back Neela couldn't stand surgeons because "they are arrogant and can't relate to people unless they are unconscious". Ha.
Oh great, it's a grumpy guy with a terminal condition. As opposed to the "going gentle into that good night" type. It's like there are only two types. Oh, trauma 1.
I notice Abby overrides consent issues whilst Ray - Ray who used to be very very casual about consent, what with the organ harvest thing, and the surrogate mother, and we're not even going to mention Zoe - is the one trying to stop her.
....Is it wrong to be very bored by the Big Dramatic Death episode? It's like all the stuff which was going somewhere last week (Abby/Luka and the baby, and Neela's fight with Mikey) as been put on hold. The one bit I like is when he drops the molecule model with his right hand whilst talking to student Abby i.e. before he's been diagnosed. That was a nice touch.
What is it about ice-skating=freedom in American drama? I remember this theme being in an episode of Buffy, in which she goes skating as a symbol of her urge to be freed from her Slayer destiny. And here it is again.

12.12 Split Decisions (UK E4 spoilers)
I watched on the mildly cut 2nd chance screening, due to work commitments.
Was that a Abby "previously on..."?
Clemente is MIA. Kerry is seeing therapists about her hip. Dubenko agrees to cover as attending, suggesting we'll get a classic ER/surgery fight.
Kerry: Hey, Burnett. What the hell are you doing here?
Ray: Er, I'm working.
Kerry: You quit.
Ray: No I didn't.
I cannot believe his chutzpah at bluffing Kerry like that. Dubenko is clearly in on the bluff.
Neela's got the surgical elective. Hurrah. She and Mikey are looking for a place of their own. OK. She corrected Ray when he called Gallant that, but I like the idea that Ray is deliberately doing it to wind her up, so I'm going to do it too.
Zoe's back. Excellent use of the elbow from Neela to make Ray acknowledge he might know a Zoe Butler. She's been beaten up. By her father. Is it me, or shouldn't her eye be more puffy?
Morris has an internet date.
Who is this Penny?
Zoe's sister ran away years ago, to San Francisco. She doesn't want to go to the police. With nowhere else to go, she asks if she can move in with Ray. Er, hello? Like her dad won't find her at Ray's and beat the hell out of the both of them.
Morris is getting arsey because Dubenko is so slow at dealing with patients. Who is this Penny? Did they just insert a character without warning? Am I hallucinating her? Pratt is also getting arsey with Dubenko.
Hello! Sam has Brokeback hair!
Aw, Abby and Luka. Isn't he just adorable? Abby wants to keep the baby secret. Their banter is just lovely.
"I want something to eat."
"Again?"
She's eating for two, doofus.
Who is this Penny?
Dubenko calls social on Zoe, over Ray's head. Ray is determined not to let social take her.
Not only has Neela got the surgical elective but she's got Mikey a placement as an R2. Mikey wants to go and visit a vet in the Vet's Hospital. He pretty clearly doesn't want to take Neela to meet his buddies, but she isn't listening and wants to go with him. And when they get there, you can see why. He wants to talk about blowing up sex dolls and releasing them into the Iraqi air. Which is a pretty dumb thing to do in an Arabic country but I suppose moronic soldiers will be mornic soldiers.
KJ's dad has been arrested on suspicion of DUI. And naturally Pratt is dumb enough to fake the blood test. Is he crazy?
The Dubenko subplot just doesn't interest me. When he was this maverick surgeon wandering down to make inappropriate suggestions to Abby he was much more entertaining. I don't remember him being this hesitant. In fact, I sort of suspect they had to rewrite Clemente's part for this week as Dubenko.
Zoe: I bet you wish you'd never met me now.
Ray: No....Though it would have been easier if I'd met you four or five years from now.
Abby is unwilling to settle in one or other apartment. Luka winds her up, claiming that identical twins run in his family. Wow, was Goran ever having a bad hair day when they did the Chicago location shooting for this block.
The Morris, Pratt and Ray thing with the extra nips is just hysterical.
Morris: What? We don't knock?
Ray: On a curtain?
As profound shallowness has pointed out, the three of them are finally becoming clear characters.
The whole Abby and Luka shopping thing is just funny and sweet. Interesting that Luka says that it is their first when Abby is clearly struggling to decide whether or not to say "first for me". Lovely. Also the bit where Abby makes them hide.
Luka: I don't even know who she is!
Abby: Well, she knows who you are!
Luka: I don't think so.
Abby: Oh Luka, every woman who works in the hospital knows who you are, trust me.
Ray arranges everything to get Zoe out, sending her off to her sister and slapping down her dad when he tries to stop her. Ooh, darker Ray. Yum.
Mikey wants to go back to Iraq. Is he insane? Oh wait...he's got to go because he's a total spare part to the programme. Still, you can't blame Neela for letting her natural grumpiness out at him. She didn't think she was marrying a soldier.
It's a curious blend this one. There are soem great comic moments, but the drama seems a bit forced and a whole substory does nothing for me.

Ray arranges everything to get Zoe out, sending her off to her sister and slapping down her dad when he tries to stop her. Ooh, darker Ray. Yum.
Mikey wants to go back to Iraq. Is he insane? Oh wait...he's got to go because he's a total spare part to the programme. Still, you can't blame Neela for letting her natural grumpiness out at him. She didn't think she was marrying a soldier.
It's a curious blend this one. There are soem great comic moments, but the drama seems a bit forced and a whole substory does nothing for me.
